Hotels

The Des Moines area has a ton of hotel options and of course AirBnB options as well. Here are a few you may want to consider.

Nearby

The Sleep Inn/Mainstay Suites is the closest hotel to our home, about a 2 minute drive (or a 1.3 mile walk if you’re feeling ambitious). Both hotels are housed in the same building.

Downtown

For a stylish downtown option, check out the Des Lux hotel. Our favorite for staycation getaways, with a hidden gem lobby bar we like to frequent for date nights. Approximately a 15-20 minute drive.

East Village

A chic rooftop bar and a location in the heart of the walkable shopping district of the East Village make the AC Hotel a fun choice as well.

Places to Enjoy

While you’re in town, here are some other attractions you may want to check out.

For Food and Drink

Truman’s Pizza | Downtown (East Village)

Fun south-downtown spot we like to go for brunch or a casual dinner.

Ceviche | Downtown (East Village)

Cuban-themed East Village bar/restaurant with a charming outdoor space (and one of our favorite date spots). Try the mojitos and the tostones.

Aposto | Downtown

Beautiful Italian dishes including handmade pasta served in a restored Victorian home in Sherman Hill. This spot is very dear to us - we’ve had many special date nights there and it’s where we got engaged. You’ll need a reservation so plan ahead.

Pots and Shots (Waukee)

Plant-themed bar (yes, you read that right) in Waukee where you can buy plants or a craft cocktail. Friendly staff and one of our regular spots.

El Guapo’s Tequila and Tacos (Waukee)

Casual Waukee spot for delicious tacos, fresh guacamole, and a variety of tequila-inflused libations. A happy hour favorite of ours.

For a stroll

Raccoon River Park (West Des Moines)

If you’re staying out west, try this park for a refreshing morning walk around Blue Heron Lake. Rentals (kayaks, canoes, etc.) available.

Gray’s Lake/Water Works Park (Downtown)

Popular adjoining parks on the south side of downtown, perfect for a morning stroll.

Downtown Riverwalk (Downtown/East Village)

Trails and bridges connect downtown Des Moines and the East Village.

Pappajohn Sculpture Park | (Downtown)

Nice outdoor park with sculptures in a variety of styles. Across the street from American Dream Machines.
